DAY 8    Drive/ Fly tour of the Great Ocean Road     B L

On any given Sunday, this very James Bond Road, (in terms of its sheer geographical theatricality) is threaded with “Hogs” and sleek 750s twisting & dipping between forest and surf while we regular journey-makers proceed Indian file, too intent on drinking in the scenery to manage much more than 30 mph. Which, as it turns out, is pretty OK – for Victoria’s Great Ocean Road is one of the loveliest, and most dramatic, coastal drives in the world.” Christine McCabe

Seppeltsfield Wines ~ Photo Credit to Tourism Australia

At the award winning Henschke winery you’ll enjoy a tasting of Hill of Grace wines, surely one of the most evocative phrases in the world of wine. “Whenever I visit the Hill of Grace vineyard, perched up in the Eden Valley next to the angular Gnadenberg Lutheran Church, its cemetery and some old ruins, I inevitably catch myself alone, standing and staring at the oldest vines planted in 1860 by a bloke called Nicolaus Stanitzki. It’s a state of wonderment in which I stand, in awe of the more than 150 years these vines have witnessed and the implied wisdom of their gnarly, wizened old bodies.

Known today as the Grandfathers, these are the centerpiece of the Hill of Grace vineyard, sitting among thirteen plots of variously aged vines. Of these plots, just seven are planted to Shiraz, the others comprising Riesling, Semillon and Mataro. Aside from the 1860s plantings, which sit right at the center of the vineyard, other shiraz plantings date from 1910, 1951, 1952, 1956, 1965 and 1989, with a section of the 1952 Church Block replanted in 1997.”

You’ll be returned to your accommodation in time to relax and freshen up for dinner at 1918 Bistro Grill set within an old villa in a delightful garden setting in the Barossa Valley.   There you’ll enjoy some of the best modern Australian cuisine in the Barossa Valley. (Beverages and wine will be at additional expense)

Thank you from Rick Kaufman

Hi Karen,

As Camilla and I wait to board our plane from New Zealand for a long journey home, we write to thank you for putting together a most wonderful six week adventure in Australia and New Zealand. It’s difficult to choose a favorite spot. I have been to a lot of spectacularly beautiful places in the world but none surpass Lord Howe Island off the coast of New South Wales.

When flying from Sydney to New Zealand we thought nothing could possibly top our initial three weeks in Australia.  We left with such a love for your country and an appreciation for every single excellent accommodation you provided us.   Now as we discuss it, we cannot choose between the two countries. Apples and oranges but equally sweet. We leave New Zealand with so much appreciation for this place . . . the beauty just never ends.

Although we were initially worried about all the strenuous activities you had scheduled for us we are extremely glad we missed none of them.   Each hike turned out to be truly memorable – especially the three days on the Routeburn Track that was simply spectacular.  Every kayak experience was stunning.  We were apprehensive about the seven hour caving and rock climbing adventure in Waitomo but loved it.  We had never done anything like that before.  It was exhilarating, thrilling and we were captivated by the beautiful glow worms.  It was like looking at the Galaxy on a beautiful clear night.

You did a great job!

Geiser & Witherell OZ Honeymoon Camel Tour DEC 2014Australia is such a large country and we had no idea how to start the process of planning a honeymoon that would cover all the highlights.  The Australia 2000 team took over and created us the most phenomenal, carefree honeymoon we could ask for!  They really  took into account our active lifestyle and personalities to make sure we were busy rafting, scuba diving, hiking, etc. while getting to see several of the diverse ecosystems Geiser & Witherell OZ Honeymoon DEC 2014around Australia.  All in one trip we were able to see Cairns, Ayers Rock, Kangaroo Island, and Sydney!  It was a perfect mix of city and nature with no worries for us as far as logistics of transportation (air, land and sea)!  It was the best decision I could have made to put the planning of this trip in the hands of these talented professionals and I would definitely go to them again for our next adventure (New Zealand is looking pretty awesome…)!

Thanks,
Crystal and Dave

– The surfing lesson was fun (but cold)

– Christmas brunch at the Waterfront was great.  Good food, good service, and a beautiful view!

– Experienced “Boxing Day”.  Wow, that was so much crazier than Black Friday in the U.S.!

– Took a tour of the Sydney Opera house

– We all loved the GrHeather Sullivan OZ DEC 2014 #5eat Barrier Reef cruise and snorkeling.  Soooo beautiful and the water was sooo warm!

– The kids loved feeding the kangaroos and wallabies at the wildlife sanctuary

– We enjoyed Daintree and saw a Cassowary bird with chick along the road.  Very cool.  Also had lunch at a café on the beach and listened to an interesting Aboriginal talk at the information center.

– The villas at O’Reilly’s are breathtaking!  Very relaxing.

– Walked along the river in Brisbane and did some shopping.  Beautiful city.  It would have been nice to have another day there.

Thank you from Gerald Fuller & Siamak Gholami

Our two week Australia/New Zealand adventure experience was truly one of the finest vacations either of us has ever had. Karen and her Michigan office and international staffs executed a fine-tuned, action-packed, successive whirlwind that we slept dead 12 of the 14 return hour flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles. Exploring the north Sydney beaches on Harleys, flying low along the Sydney beaches in a sea plane, climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, swimming in the Coral Sea with three sharks, sand boarding, New Zealand jet boating, paddling the Waka (Mori outrigger), gazing in awe walking the Milford Track, mountain biking down a 3,000 foot mountain to downtown Nelson, hiking the Abel Tasman and Heaphy Traks, climbing active volcanoes of New Zealand’s north island, and chartering 11 helicopters, 3 planes, and a sea plane are just some of the excitement included in Karen’s adventure itinerary.

Gerry Fuller & Siamak Gholami SYD (2)Now to the hotels. Wow! Park Hyatt in Sydney, Eichardt’s Private Hotel in Queenstown, Edenhouse near Nelson, Peppers Awaroa Lodge in Abel Tasman National Park are just a few of the perfectly suited for the experience and location we enjoyed. Even with walking/trekking, mountain biking, paddling a Waka, and climbing mountains, we still gained an average of 7.5 pounds each; enough said on the naturally nutritious, delicious, and extremely well-presented food.

Gerry Fuller & Siamak GholamiWe spent nearly two years working with Karen to get the trip we wanted. Gerald wanted to end his 60s with a bang and Siamak just lives life with a bang. Together we all pulled it together, but the nucleus was Karen and her staff. Thank you.

Thank you from David & Adrea Benkoff

Dear Karen,

We traveled to Australia anAdrea Benkoffd New Zealand for 3 ½ weeks on a spectacular tour tailored to our tastes. We hopscotched around Australia from Sydney to Cairns, Ayers Rock to Kangaroo Island. Every stop included personalized tours, wonderful people and terrific wildlife experiences. We even spent a day in Barossa wine country sampling from four wineries.

The scenery in New Zealand was picture postcard perfect. The expDavid Benkofferiences that Karen provided in Arthur’s Pass, Queenstown and Doubtful Sound highlighted the natural beauty and provided exciting activities such as a Jet Boat Ride, overnight cruise and sheep shearing. We toured with an Aboriginal and Maori guide and experienced their lifestyle first hand.

Whether we had a private tour or joined with others, all the selected tour guides were personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with.

Australia 2000 made this the adventure of a lifetime.

Thanks, Adrea and David Benkoff

Thank you from Carl & Laura Woodruff

Thank you, Karen and staff, for a wonderful three weeks in Australia!

P1000221We truly enjoyed relaxing Palm Cove and our magnificent Angsana Resort accommodations, right on the Pacific, and at the perfect time of year, October: 70F degrees and sunshine every day. How about orchids growing beside your front door? How about glorious sunrises and sunsets? A little piece of heaven. Then on to Melbourne, such a clean, vibrant, artistic city, and ending in Sydney, perhaps the most special metropolis on the continent with its unique Opera House and Harbor Bridge. Who could ask for a better vacation? Thank you, too, for arranging all the necessary help for Carl, who is handicapped and unable to walk more than short distances. You made everything so easy! Fortunately, there is more to see and do, which gives us all the reason we need to go back for a second (or third?) trip.

You are the best!

Carl & Laura Woodruff

Thank you from Marnie & David Balog

Dear Karen,

Our 2nd trip with Australia 2000 once again exceeded all expectations. We didn’t want to come home! You have a great gift for understanding our personalities and matching the itinerary and adventures!

Sailing in Sydney Harbor with Colin was a great way to start our fabulous trip and climbing the bridge showed us a most spectacular view of Sydney at twilight. David loved all the fishing trips but the marlin got away so he may just have to go back and try again! The Maria Island Walk was one of many highlights and we loved sleeping outdoors in a most gorgeous place.

Hiking along the Great Ocean Road and dinner at The Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld made my birthday the BEST ever! Staying at Stranrear Homestead on Kangaroo Island with Lyn and Graham showed us another side of life in Australia, a working sheep farm. After dinner, Graham took us out in his land rover to spot kangaroos and wallabies. Lyn should make the list for top chefs in the world! The hospitality and gourmet meals at Stranrear made us feel very special. Actually every day of our trip made us feel happy and very special!

Our memories of the wonderful adventures you planned keep us smiling! Thank you for making our 2nd trip with Australia 2000 one we will always remember.

We want to go again!

Dear Karen,

My trip was wonderful!  A big THANK YOU to you and your associates for your help in planning it.

I never really thought I would take this trip until I found out about your agency from the write up in the Sunday Detroit Free Press.  I had to keep pinching myself that I was really there after wanting to go for 60 years!

I am very glad you advised me to spend the extra money to upgrade my seat on the Air New Zealand flight to Auckland.  I cannot say enough good things about Air New Zealand and the flight attendant you alerted ahead of time to watch over me.  She was incredibly kind to help me through immigration and customs.

Auckland was lovely, the personal tour guides, Pete and Christine, were so helpful and went out of their way to welcome and show me their part of New Zealand.  City Life Hotel upgraded me to a suite and it was very comfortable. I only wish that I had more time there.  My last day in Auckland Pete showed up at 7 a.m. all spiffed up in suit and tie to transfer me to to the airport for my flight to Australia.

A friend was waiting for me in Adelaide and I really think that was my favorite part of the trip. Adelaide is a beautifully laid out city and the surrounding country is gorgeous. I loved Kangaroo Island.  It was perfect weather wise and it was there that I first saw kangaroos and koalas. Other places I enjoyed were the wineries at McLaren Vale and Granite Island where we hopped aboard a horse drawn carriage tour.

On to Melbourne on Virgin Australia, where I was upgraded to business class for the short flight and yet another reunion with friends.  After resting for a couple of days at their lovely home, their mother, who is my lifelong friend, arrived.  We visited the wonderful botanical gardens and enjoyed viewing the wild life.  Joanne made a Kangaroo supper one night and it was surprisingly good. The next day we set off to Canberra where we toured the new Parliament building and the War Memorial.  They were both amazing.

On to Sydney… The Sydney waterfront was all that I expected and that is where we met my sister and husband. I parted with my Melbourne friends and spent the rest of the day with my sister and family over in Manly Beach. I walked to the Quay to explore the Rocks and took a tea time harbor cruise.

I enjoyed the food but found Australia very expensive both in restaurants and grocery stores. Lamb was cheaper than here and I brought back Vegemite which I love (like British Marmite).

The Sheraton Hotel in Los Angeles that you arranged for me was just fine.  I took advantage of both the lovely accommodation and the limo transfers you arranged for me.

Thank you again, Karen, I could not have done it without you.

Regards,

June Fasang

P.S. I will not hesitate to recommend your agency.

Thank you from The Robinet Family

Dear Karen,

We can’t thank you enough for putting together such a wonderful itinerary for us. Our trip to Australia and New Zealand was the trip of a lifetime and one that none of us will forget.

From Green Island to Ayers Rock to Sydney to Queenstown, we have memories of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. The adventures you chose for us were terrific.  From snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef to the Sounds of Silence dinner and camel ride at sunrise in Ayer’s Rock from Bridgeclimb, New Year’s Eve festivities and sailing on Sydney Harbour in Sydney to ziplining and bungy jumping in Queenstown, New Zealand, etc., everything was fantastic!

We’re already talking of going back! We booked this trip because we wanted to do a big family trip before our oldest son goes away to college. Thank you for exceeding our expectations. Australia and New Zealand truly are spectacular places to visit. The Aussie’s & Kiwi’s are wonderful too! They really know how to enjoy life and they made sure that we enjoyed it too. Thank you to you and your staff.

Sincerely,

The Robinet Family

Thank you from Dave & Nona Church

Hi Karen,

We wanted to send you a note to bring you up to date on the progress of our trip. We arrived in Hobart this morning (Sat., Feb. 9) and had the good fortune of this being the town’s Market Day with lots of activities in the town center. It is also the occasion of the World Wooden Ship Festival in Hobart Harbor (3 days every two years).

We received your wonderful fruit basket upon our arrival in Sydney after our cruises to New Zealand and New Caledonia Islands. We have enjoyed some of the fruit each day. Your thoughtfulness is most appreciated.   (Our tour guide) Suzanne was a most delightful, informative and personable guide on our tours of the environs of Sydney and the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park north of Sydney. She sends you her greetings.

Each link of our trip has flowed perfectly, thanks to your planning and arrangements. An unexpected delight has been the friendliness and helpfulness of strangers asking if there is anything they can do to help us when we look confused or lost.

We really appreciate having the Grace Hotel as our center of operations in Sydney. This Hotel is first class in every way….great staff people, available laundry, wonderful breakfasts, luxurious atmosphere, walking distance to places of interest. We really enjoyed our tours of the Sydney Opera House yesterday morning and attending the Verdi opera last night.

We look forward to our 3 day walk on Maria Island beginning tomorrow, and the experiences waiting for us at Port Arthur and Adelaide. We are grateful for this adventure you have organized for us.

Best regards,

Dave & Nona Church

Detroit Free Press “Travel Diva” Recommends Australia 2000 Travel

Dear Travel Diva: I am trying to plan a trip to Australia and need assistance from a travel agent who has expertise in the country. Do you happen to know of an agency in Michigan? My particular interest is to visit the Australian wine-growing regions and to travel by train. –Down Under Wonder

Dear Down: Karen Hardy Hodgson, owner of Australia 2000 Travel in Birmingham, is an Aussie who specializes in Australia/New Zealand, especially in custom itineraries like the one you’re looking for.

She says that in her 20 years of sending tourists to Australia, she finds that Americans now know far more about the faraway nation than they used to. It’s also a lot easier to get there, with nonstops to Sydney from Los Angeles and to Brisbane from Dallas.

“When I started coming here (from Australia) 30 years ago, you had to make five stops. Now you can fly nonstop,” she says. “It’s like taking the bus.” OK, it’s a bus that takes 14 hours, but it flies overnight. Although Delta flies to Sydney, she likes the service on Qantas better; it’s also a Star Alliance partner with American Airlines.

Flights generally cost about $1,600 to $2,000 round-trip. She advises visitors to plan a two-week trip at minimum — three days for traveling and 11 days there.

Most Americans don’t realize that Australia is about the same size as the continental U.S., Hodgson says — so don’t try to do the entire nation at once, mate. Explore that Aussie magic slowly.

“I try to give people four days at any one spot,” says Hodgson.

It was our 25th wedding anniversary and my 65th birthday and I had my eyes set on Australia and New Zealand. But what a headache I got trying to plan it solo. I lucked up on Karen at Australia 2000 and what a breeze it became.

It isn’t every day that you make plans and have an experience of ease and grace from a customer service perspective. And it isn’t every day that you find good people with a big heart like Karen and her staff that really care and bend over backwards to make your dreams come true.

It isn’t every day that every desire in your imagination becomes a reality, as you take in the beauty of another country – the warm people, the ancient customs, the cuisine, the nature, the Great Barrier Reef, sacred land of Uluru, kangaroos, camels, and wild birds, Sydney, clear blue waters and Ferg’s burgers of Queenstown, the Wearable World of Art in Wellington, fine wineries of Nelson, art, music, green stone, the snow capped mountains. Yes, we did it all! And, I tell you we enjoyed every moment of our 25-day experience.

We owe every expression of awe and beauty to Karen. And so I say with deep gratitude, look no further, if this is your destination. You will never find more dedication, more experience and wisdom, more spirit than Australia 2000.

The BEST of Australia for You!

Australia 2000 Travel Newsletter
G’day Mates,

It is our privilege to hand-select the finest tour operators, accommodation and tour guides throughout the GLORIOUS South Pacific. It is no small task and one that is never compromised. By so doing we ensure our ability to handcraft breathtaking experiential, adventure packed itineraries for you, our discerning travelers.

Each year, by special invitation, I attend the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), Australia’s premier tourism trade event and the largest international travel trade show of its kind in the southern hemisphere. During the arduous convention, comprised of four days of meetings between travel designers, like ourselves, and Australian suppliers, strong business relationships are formed that permit us to bring you the very best Australia has to offer. This year Perth, capital of Western Australia, hosted one of tourisms most important events.

Preceding the adventure that culminated in Perth I spent a few days in my hometown, Sydney. Staying at the chic and sophisticated Hilton Sydney built on a long history of hospitality, expertise, phenomenal design, and ground breaking innovation was a wonderful experience. The luxurious Hilton Sydney is certainly a fabulous vantage point from which to explore one of the World’s most magnificent cities.

From Sydney I flew to Darwin in “The Top End” and stayed at Mandalay Luxury Stay, a gorgeous colonial style stone cottage originally built by Lord Alistair McAlpine. Laying in a hammock on the verandah of the house, sipping a chilled Aussie chardonnay while watching the fiery red sun sink into the sea was certainly a marvelous forerunner to the unique adventure awaiting me.

To my joy, the following morning Sab Lord, owner of Lords Kakadu & Arnhemland Safaris, escorted me on a private three day Kakadu, Arnhemland and Mary Region tour. During the adventure I was privileged to walk through the sacred sites of Arnhemland with an Aboriginal guide who told the stories of the rock paintings created by his forefathers. One breathtaking experience it seemed followed another on Sab’s tour. Our final evening was one of complete indulgence spent at Bamurru Lodge where water buffalo and agile wallabies wandered freely, where each meal was a taste sensation, where the Milky Way sparkled in the pitch black sky of the wilderness…just for me or so it seemed!

Three days in cosmopolitan Sydney followed by four days in The Top End well prepared me for ATE where one of the many highlights was a meeting with the representative of Maria Island Walk. The multi award winning, unspoiled natural island off of the east coast of Tasmania is home to a four day luxury guided walk that is guaranteed to create long lasting memories. Waxing lyrical about my own life changing walk on Maria Island led to suggestions of creating a tour for just five couples to experience the wonder. Do contact us to express your interest in joining this extraordinary life changing adventure.

Until our next adventure we wish you a glorious summer filled with all that makes your heart sing.

~Karen

Our continued success relates in no small part to the support of you, our valued clients. We are delighted that you have found us. By referring our fine services to your family and friends you help us do what we so love to do. For that we thank you.

Thank you from Susan Presberg-Greene

Hi, Karen and everyone!

We had a terrific time, and just as you had planned, we were treated like gold at every step of the way. All of the drivers you hired just for us were terrific. We loved our time with Suzanne and with Colin in Sydney, both of whom clearly love their new careers, and all of our flight schedules worked out very well, with no stress for layovers. We were even pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to business elite class for each of us on the long flight from Sydney to LA on Delta!

We truly had the trip of a lifetime, and spoke many, many times about wanting to return. After all, we need to see the North Island and to stay with Uncle.

Many, many thanks to you and your crew for a job very, very well done, Karen.

Susan
